I'm a CNM, have been working in maternity care since the late 70s & women's health even longer and had my own baby at the Maternity Center birth center in NYC in 1977. When I started out, some OBs where I worked were still using twilight sleep, routine epis, and midforceps, but we nurses were energized by the pendulum swing we saw toward Lamaze, fathers at birth, the "rebirth" of breastfeeding etc. It has been strange and sad to watch the pendulum swing back to meds and interventions. Like you I am grateful for the skills that OBs bring to the table, but I chose midwifery because I believed that it really is the gold standard of maternity care for the vast majority of women. It's a source of no little frustration that 30 years on, we still at times seem to be the world's best-kept secret. Naively I once thought health care insurers would line up to work with us; you know that hasn't happened, and certainly not for CPMs. I can't say it's been all bad; it's easier to find a midwife these days, but there are still so many misconceptions about who we are, what we do, OBs still hold most of the power (and get the most media exposure)... It seems the pendulum may be on its way back to the other, mother and baby focused side, especially with this new support of the Joint Commission. It's important to speak up and be heard, it adds momentum and exposure for the way we know birth can be, so good on ya for this effort. Keep it up.quiltmidwifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05467952618087559235noreply@blogger.com
